Criteria For Success

Safety:

Requirements for design:
Each team driver should be able to reach the pedals and be comfortable over their full range of movement, without stretching the leg straight.
Back should be fully supported.
Vehicles coming close behind must easily be seen through the mirrors on both sides.
Seat belts must sit nicely over the pelvic bone, the belt should be comfortable, firm and not likely to slip off the shoulder. The seat position must ensure that the rider does not slide forward and under the seat belt.
During the race:
Always stay to the left of the blue line unless overtaking
Ensure that you look where you want your vehicle to go when turning so it can be done smoothly.
Always be aware of vehicles around you, by looking at the mirrors.
If you are planning to move from one side of the track to the other, give a quick glance over your shoulder to avoid moving into the path of another vehicle.
Use a light grip on the steering wheel or levers; push the pedals from the hips, back and shoulders, with relaxed arms. This will allow you to steer smoothly and keep a straight line.

Function:

We should make sure that our bike will endure a 24 hour race. The conditions of the day should not majorly impact our performance, the bike should be suited to all weathers, including rain, wind, cold and heat. Our design should be able to smoothly travel on any road surfaces, cracks, hills, bumps and dents should not be a problem. We will ensure that this happens by adapting our design to these and the energy breakthrough’s specifications and guaranteeing that the materials we use also meet the specifications.

Need:

The need we have to meet is to build, design and race a Human Powers Vehicle in a 24 hour race. To successfully achieve this we have to meet several other needs, they include, safety, function, environment, resources, time and cost. The need of safety will be met by reading the specifications outlined by the energy breakthrough, understanding them and successfully including them in our design. The need of function will be met by making sure that our bike can endure a 24 hour race through making sure that we use strong, light and efficient materials, and put together well. The need of environmentally friendliness will fulfilled by using environmentally friendly materials and making sure that we dispose of our leftovers properly. Resources will be found by asking businesses for any donations and by buying them as part of our budget. The money we use will come from fundraisers and sponsors. We will finish the bike two weeks before the race making sure we have time to try it out and fix any problems and complications.

Environment:

Caring for the environment is a large value of the Energy Breakthrough, we need to certify that we are properly caring for our environment in our project. We will show the judges that we are able to care for the environment by displaying environmentally friendly behavior in the campsite. To confirm that our project is not damaging towards our environment we will,  use materials that do not ruin the environment, we will also make sure that we dispose of our materials properly and recycle the ones possible. A large amount of our resources are other mechanics’ and businesses’ leftovers, that have been kindly donated towards our project. By using these, we are reusing materials and making sure that they don’t go to waste.

Resources:

Most of our resources will come from businesses who have kindly donated them to us. The ones that we can’t get through this method, we will purchase with our money from fundraisers and sponsors.

Time:

The Energy Breakthrough is between the 22nd and the 25th of November. Our aim is to finish the project two weeks beforehand, so we can try it out and fix and inconveniences. We will manage our time so that we don’t have compromise our bike or rush anything. If necessary we will work on weekends, holidays and after school.

Cost:

To cover all of our costs, including, bike materials, food, flights, lights and anything else, for both teams, we will have to raise around $10 000. This money will come from fundraisers and sponsors. Fundraisers will get us about $3 000, so we hope to find a few people and companies who can sponsor our project. Donations will also be need, lowering the amount of things we have to pay for.
